Overview

Mendocino Forest Products LLC. (MFP) is looking for an experienced Debarker/Bucksaw Operator  to join our Sawmill Operations team in Ukiah, CA on our Day Shift.

Responsibilities

The Debarker/Bucksaw Operator operates the Debarker/Bucksaw machine to remove bark from logs prior to entering the mill, in a safe and productive manner.

  • Operate hand console to move logs through Debarker system, and operates Debarker to remove all bark from logs
  • Monitor conveyors to prevent plug ups
  • Inspect Debarker machine every day, and check lubrication system.
  • Recognize possible problems and reports them to team leader, supervisor or maintenance as required
  • Operate chain saw as required
  • Clean log length scanner optics and banner arrays
  • Communicate regularly with other team members and participates in team effort in work area
  • Actively communicate and be proactive with team members and supervisors
  • Respond to supervisor’s direction and team member requests as instructed in a safe and responsible manner
  • Other duties as necessary when necessary
  • Monitors buck saws which cut logs into different lengths according to cutting orders from sawmill management.
  • Operates controls manually when a log improperly enters system.
  • Monitors belts, kickers, and log bins for crossed up logs and be able to clear as necessary.
  • Checks and clears metal detector to hog.
  • Inspects buck saws daily to check for proper operation. Recognize possible problems and report them to supervisor or maintenance as required.
  • Accurately identifies logs by species and size.
  • Communicates with knuckle boom and DLI operators.
  • Operates chain saw as needed.
  • Cleans scanner optics and banner arrays.
  • Acts as Relief on knuckle boom.
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean
  • Other duties as necessary when necessary

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • One year of sawmill experience or 90 days of specialized training or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance
  • Must be able to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb into and off machinery and equipment numerous times daily.
  • The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. 
  • The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration. 
  • The employee is also regularly required to sit when operating equipment.
  • The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and communicate.
  • The employee will be required to work physically with tools such as shovels, axes, other hand tools, and hand power tools that are related to forestry and construction activities.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of weight and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds of weight.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Noise levels can be moderate to loud when outside of the office areas.
  • Safety Glasses, reflective vests and safety shoes are required outside of the office areas.
