Resaw Operator Wanted for Swing Shift (3:30 pm - 12:15 am M-F)

This is a non-exempt position with an hourly rate of $27.65.

The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. The Resaw Operator operates resaw equipment to process boards that do not meet specifications into boards of lesser thickness or width in accordance with work orders. This position is responsible for maintaining safe, efficient, and productive machine operation while ensuring compliance with quality and production standards.

  • Operate the resaw to cut boards that do not meet specifications into boards of lesser thickness or width according to work orders in a safe and productive manner.
  • Observe lumber on conveyors as it approaches the saw to determine the appropriate cut to be made.
  • Select the correct saw settings for thickness, width, and infeed roll speed.
  • Monitor the automatic feeding of lumber into the saw and manually guide the end of the lumber into feed rolls when necessary.
  • Change saw blades and guides daily to maintain safe and efficient operation.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
  • 30–60 days of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for prolonged periods while observing automatic feeding machines.
  • The employee regularly walks, use hands, fingers, and wrists to handle materials; and reach with hands and arms while operating machinery or equipment.
  • The employee may occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to retrieve fallen materials when necessary.
  • The employee regularly lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds, frequently lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds, including lumber, logs, and bolsters, with or without assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration from machinery such as saws, conveyors, and hydraulic systems.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to airborne particles, including sawdust, lubricants, fumes, and the risk of electrical shock.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, as well as high, precarious places including catwalks, scaffolding, and elevated work areas.
  • The employee is also exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, when working in or around outdoor areas of the facility.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, requiring the consistent use of hearing protection in designated areas.
  • The employee is required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as mandated by company policy and OSHA Standards, which may include safety glassess or face shields, hearing protection, safety gloves, steel-toe safety footwear, hard hats and respiratory protection if necessary.
